Scouting teaches personal and interpersonal skills like: problem-solving, team building, independent thinking, survival techniques, sharing, spiritual strengthening, and recognizes the youth's efforts through an extensive badge recognition program. We develop the youth of today into the leaders of tomorrow while building long-lasting memories and life-long friendships.
Scouts South Africa is one of the largest youth organizations. The program is family based with a focus on teamwork, self-confidence and achievement.
ANYONE! Scouting prides itself as a wonderful experience for the entire family. Scouting is the largest youth organization on the planet with over 20 million members worldwide! Cubs are for children aged 7 to 11, and Scouts are from ages 11 to 18. Both boys and girls are welcome.
The program is a series of enjoyable activities based upon abilities related to age and group consensus, such as meetings, day trips, craft projects, outdoor skills, weekend and summer camping.
A child may start visiting Cubs when they are seven and a half and then join at eight. Cubs are for children aged 7 to 11, and Scouts are from ages 11 to 18.
The leaders are regular people who volunteer their time for the benefit of young people. Often they are the parents of Scouts who are in the unit or local leaders in the community. On many occasions, past scouts from the troop also become leaders. All adult leaders go through background checks and are registered as members of Scouts South Africa. They receive specific training in order to be adult scout leaders.
Scouts is for boys and girls, and both genders are treated equally. We adhere to a set of rules regarding mixed gender, disallowing boys and girls to share a tent for example.
Scouting is a partnership with the parents of the young person. Scouting is an excellent opportunity for you to spend very high quality time with your son or daughter. Since the leaders are not paid they would most certainly appreciate any help that you could provide. This could range from keeping up to date with your son or daughter's progess at scouts to assisting at various scouting activities.
Both Cub (ages 8-10) and Scouts (ages 11-17) have the opportunity to go both weekend and summer camping. Scouts South Africa owns numerous great camping sights (including one on Signal Hill). Camping is a great opportunity for the yound people to explore nature, and enhance their scoutcraft skills.
Scouts can earn a wide variety of achievements and awards by having fun and learning something in areas such as citizenship, personal fitness, family living, the outdoors, nature, crafts, and more. There is an advancement system which allows scouts to advance to higher levels when they meet the criteria for the various scouting skills. There are also numerous interest badges from Chess Player to Rock Climber.
